Harry Howell Twin-Pad Arena in Flamborough (Waterdown) is undergoing a specialized expansion that will transform it into the official practice and training headquarters for the Hamilton Hammers, the city’s new American Hockey League (AHL) franchise.
In partnership with the New York Islanders and Oak View Group, the City of Hamilton is expanding the existing community facility rather than replacing it. A new two-storey, AHL-exclusive training wing is being integrated directly onto the side of the current arena. The addition will include a professional-grade player gym, medical and training rooms, video analysis spaces, a dedicated player lounge, and high-end locker rooms.
The Hamilton Hammers will use Harry Howell Arena as their primary weekday practice rink, traveling to TD Coliseum in downtown Hamilton for home games.
Protecting Community Access
Recognizing the arena’s importance to local groups such as the Flamborough Sabres, Flamborough Falcons, and Flamboro Skating Club, the City and local councillors secured firm commitments during negotiations:
- No loss of youth or community ice time. The AHL team will practice during traditional midday vacancies when the rinks are typically unused.
- Full continuity of recreational programs, public skating, and local services throughout construction.
- The facility will retain the name Harry Howell Arena in honour of the Ancaster-born Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman. The team may name its dedicated training wing separately.

The partnership also delivers direct benefits to Flamborough residents, including free open practices where fans can watch the Hammers train, and youth development clinics led by the team’s coaching staff.
